Lack Of Transparency

What occurred within the ranks of the mayor’s “White Paper” Committee is an excellent example of why transparency is needed. The White Paper committee was an informal, 12-member citizen committee formed by the mayor on January 7, 2009. According to the Town’s website, the purpose of the committee “was to make recommendations that could rectify or ameliorate the Town’s short term needs as well as create a new economic model for the development and growth of the Town.” To accomplish its purpose, the White Paper committee required full and complete access to the Town’s finances. Immediately upon setting to work, some committee members began to notice budget discrepancies and improprieties, and when their concerns were ignored and their requests to obtain further information denied, they quit the committee.

The Town is at a crossroads. Transparency is needed so that citizens are able to make informed decisions.
